DONOR EGG IVF

The first pregnancy achieved with egg donation was reported in 1984. Since that time, there has been increasing utilization of egg donation to help infertile couples/individuals conceive.

Paradigm Healthcare provides egg donation services for couples/individuals who are unable to conceive naturally. We started our Donor Egg IVF Program in the year 2006 and since then we have helped hundreds of patients achieve their goal of becoming parents.

Donor Egg IVF is an option when other traditional infertility therapies have been unsuccessful or when hormonal tests indicate very poor reproductive potential. Using an egg donor may also be appropriate for a woman whose ovaries were absent at birth or were removed or damaged by surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation. Finally, it can be an option for patients who would like to eliminate the risk of passing on a known genetic condition carried by the female partner.

The procedure involves selecting an egg donor who ideally is under the age of 30. The donor’s ovaries are stimulated to produce multiple eggs while simultaneously preparing the recipient’s uterus for embryo implantation. Once the donor eggs are retrieved, they are fertilized with the husband or partner’s sperm and the resulting embryos are transferred into the uterus of the recipient.

Egg donation may be recommended:

  • If you are going through premature menopause
  • If your ovaries are not responding to stimulation
  • If you have an abnormal ovarian reserve
  • If there is a risk of passing on a genetic disease to the child
  • If your ovaries have been affected by serious illness or chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy
  • If you have had IVF treatment but repeated cycles have indicated poor egg quality
  • If you are at an advanced reproductive age.

IMPORTANT POINTS-

If pregnancy occurs, the recipient will have a biological but not genetic relationship to the child; her partner however will be both biologically and genetically related.

It is the age of the donor that matters, not the age of the recipient. Women as old as sixty-three years of age have reportedly gotten pregnant with egg donation and have delivered healthy, happy babies. The oldest mother on record was reported by Dr. Richard Paulson in April of 1997

PRE-SCREENING EGG DONORS

All the egg-donors are young women in the age group of 21-30 years and they are recruited against meticulous and stringent criteria.

All the egg-donors have to undergo a physical examination (which includes a pelvic ultrasound) to ensure that they have an abundant supply of eggs in their ovaries. Complete information on personality traits, physical traits, skills, talents, interests, aptitudes, occupation, and education of the egg-donors is recorded. The family history of the egg-donors is also taken into account.

General mental, emotional and behavioral health is examined by a licensed psychotherapist or psychologist. Past hospitalizations, medications or ongoing therapy is noted. History of blood transfusion and addiction is also taken into account before choosing an egg-donor. It is ensured that the egg-donor is free of any substance abuse like illegal drugs, alcohol, etc. Also only non-smokers are recruited as egg-donors.

The egg donors are tested to rule out Rh incompatibility and to confirm they are free of HIV, hepatitis B and C infections, hypertension, diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia, syphilis, Gonorrhea, etc. and other diseases. They are also run through serological screening and thalessemia screening. It is ascertained that they are free of any genetic disorders before allowing participation in the egg-donor process.

Only those women who meet all the criteria are selected as egg-donors.

WAYS TO FIND AN EGG DONOR

There are many ways of obtaining donor oocytes (eggs).

  • Anonymous donors- women who are not known to the recipient. Donors may be recruited through established egg donation programs, or may be identified through agencies.
  • Known or directed donors- women who are known to the recipient. The donor is generally a close relative or friend.
  • Through Advertisements- In some instances, recipients advertise directly for donors in newspapers or on the Internet. In these circumstances, the recipient couple and the donor are known to each in a limited way, having met without an intermediary program or agency. Recipients should exercise caution about recruiting donors directly without having an intermediary program or agency screen donors.

EMBRYO DONATION

Embryo donation is an option when a couple has male and female factor causes for infertility and requires both an egg donation and a sperm donation, or when the patient is a single woman who cannot use her own eggs.

Embryo donation generally occurs when a patient or couple donates their remaining embryos from a successful IVF cycle to another patient or couple, so that the recipient(s) can have a baby of their own. The donated embryos are transferred to the uterus of the recipient mother. The resulting child is genetically related to the donors, yet is carried and raised by the recipient parent(s).

Embryo donation may be recommended if:

  • You and your partner are unlikely to conceive using your own eggs and/or sperm for fertility treatment
  • You or your partner or both have a serious condition (e.g. huntington’s disease, turner syndrome, etc) that can be passed on to the child
  • You are single and have hit your menopause
