If you have health insurance you should contact your insurance company to see what, if any, international coverage is provided. Checking with your medical insurer is a wise step as it is quite possible that your insurer might partially or fully cover a necessary medical procedure, particularly if the only other option is to have a more expensive procedure done in the U.S. or Europe. Be sure to determine ahead of time whether or not the condition being treated can be considered a "pre-existing condition" by your insurer, as they will not cover it if defined as such.

Insurance companies are starting to understand the cost-saving nature inherent in medical tourism, and have started including it in their policies. Medical tourism insurance is now being considered by insurance industry giants like Blue Cross/Blue Shield, CIGNA, Aetna, WellPoint, Bupa and Swiss Re. These companies state that they have either started or are considering pilot programs that will offer partial travel medical insurance.
